Veteran Journalist and Historian Imad Hassan Latheef Signs Chagos Sovereignty Petition

MC- UPDATE 003: Imad Hassan Latheef, a respected Maldivian journalist, former Head of the News Department at VTV, and independent historian, has officially added his name to the growing petition calling for the restoration of Maldivian sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago.

 
The petition, part of the grassroots initiative led by Maldivians for Chagos, seeks to reaffirm the historical, legal, and cultural ties between the Maldives and the Chagos islands, challenging the current stance of international bodies that have sidelined Maldivian claims.

 
Imad's signature adds scholarly weight to the campaign. Known for his contributions to the understanding of Maldivian history and sovereignty, he emphasised the importance of standing firm against historical erasure and colonial injustice.

 
"The evidence is overwhelming - Chagos has always been part of the Maldives, and it is time the world acknowledged that," Imad stated following his signing. Maldivians for Chagos continues to garner support from political leaders, legal experts, historians, and the broader public in its effort to bring the matter to international forums, such as the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24).
